The History Of Sound

The History of Sound follows Lionel (Paul Mescal) and David (Josh O’Connor), two young musicians who meet while studying in The Boston Music conservatory, circa World War I. The film centers on their deepening connection, strengthened by a shared passion for folk music and song preservation. Although the film begins in the years prior to the United States’ involvement in WWI, it continues to follow both protagonists and their relationship to each other, and music, for many decades after the war. This film is quiet, emotional, and deeply human, where the cinematography and music feel like poetry. The film is not plot driven but rather emotion driven, using music and sound to emphasize what the characters cannot communicate. The film seeks to treat sound as something fragile and temporary, mirroring human life, thus aiming for every sound in the film to have a meaning that enriches the love story between the protagonists.
