Beau Travail
|
To see Beau Travail on 35mm film is a crazy privilege, and one I am immensely excited for. One of the greatest works of 90s French cinema, this is perhaps director Claire Denis’ most famous work, and a great place to start with her filmography. A stunning portrait of repressed identity, jealousy and masculinity under the sweltering sun in the Gulf of Djibouti, Beau Travail is an entrancing, ethereal film that lives on its stark images of bodies and landscapes, images so bright and beautiful they’re custom made to be seen on 35mm. With one of the most stunning closing needle drops I have ever seen, this is a fascinating, highly rewarding film that will stick with you long after it’s over.
