The Housemaid
Can you keep a secret?
|
Is this THE trashy, feminist thriller of the year? Based on Freida McFadden’s novel of the same name, The Housemaid follows a young woman named Millie (Sydney Sweeney) as she begins working as a live-in housemaid for the affluent couple, Nina (Amanda Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Skelnar). Soon, she discovers the hidden secrets of their perfect marriage, unravelling the true nature of their relationship.
What begins as a familiar BookTok romance, quickly subverts your expectations to build a web of manipulation between the erotic tension of the characters. Weaponizing its actors’ beauty, the film delivers on its feminist themes with the edge of a trashy, sexy melodrama — both self-aware and self-indulgent. Overall, The Housemaid is an absolute treat to watch in the cinema with friends when all you want is a shabby thriller to fill the night!
P.S: This might be the beginning of the Sydney Sweeney feminist warrior cinematic universe.
