Review:

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is nothing short of a masterpiece, one that redefines what a literary adaptation can be. I urge everyone to see it.

Based on Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking 1818 novel, del Toro retells this timeless story with a vision unlike anything we’ve seen on screen. The film follows Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant yet egotistical scientist who brings a creature (Jacob Elordi) to life in an act of hubris that seals the date of both creator and creation.

Having had the absolute pleasure of watching the film months in advance at the Venice Film Festival, I cannot recommend enough experiencing it on the biggest screen possible, and what better place than Warwick Student Cinema? Del Toro’s Frankenstein is exquisitely crafted, every frame rich with intricate detail and gothic beauty. The performances from Isaac, Elordi, and Mia Goth rank among their finest work. Most striking is Elordi’s transformative portrayal of the creature: elegant, tormented, and achingly human.

What surprised me the most is how the film transcends its genre. Beneath the horror lies a deeply moving mediation on forced existence, loneliness, and the desperate search for meaning. I left the cinema in tears, this isn’t just a monster movie.

We have the absolute pleasure to be able to screen this film at WSC as a special one off. We hope to see you there.
