Materialists
Some people just want more
|
In an age of online dating, snapchatting and situationships, Materialists offers us a witty, entertaining look at contemporary modern relationships. I love the way that Materialists explores the complexities and nuances of real human relationships and shows us that real life isn’t a rom com movie and that romance can be hard. Celine Song, director of Past Lives, has done a stunning job with the same thoughtful, poetic style as Past Lives, yet still keeping things fun and insightful all at once. It really feels like a glimpse into the characters lives, with long scenes and wide shots which allow the conversations to unfold and feel organic (no thanks to the stacked cast) and only emphasises the subtle emotional shifts and intimate lingering glances. It’s an alcove within the often fast paced and rushed cavern of the modern romance movie which offers audiences time to breathe and feel and observe. This is what cinema should make you feel like.
