The Colors Within

Naoko Yamada (A Silent Voice) returns with The Colors Within, a dazzling, pretty coming-of-age film. It follows Totsuko (Sayu Suzukawa), a high schooler with the ability to see people’s ‘colours’ – visual representations of their inner selves. When she meets Kimi, who's colour is unlike anything she has seen, they form a band with their quiet, music-enthusiast classmate Rui.

At its core, The Colors Within is about finding your own colour in the incoherent mosaic of life, and how this discovery also comes from sharing the joy of others as you collectively embrace the world around you. Alluding to Totsuko's queer awakening, Yamada explores how music becomes a tool for understanding feelings which the pressures of the environment around you never give you the space to explore.
